American Made (2017)

“American Made” was inspired from the real life story of Barry Seal who was more than a pilot, drug transporter and finally a informant to the White House during the Ronald Reagan’s era. Directed by Doug Liman and starred by Tom Cruise (Barry Seal) and Domhnall Gleeson (Monty ‘Schafer’), “American Made” pictures extraordinary life of Barry Seal in a funny format;

Barry Seal who had an ordinary life in the beginning as a regular airline (TWA) pilot, receives an offer from Monty ‘Schafer’ (CIA) for the operations in the Central America. He initially starts with shooting photos of communist treats in the region by flying very low over the camps. During this task he engages with the Medellin Cartel linked to Pablo Escobar who struggle to transport drugs to US. Then he starts smuggling drug on the way back to home.

His great service was highly appreciated by both parties, CIA and Cartel, that he promotes transporting guns to South America for the opponents of the communist regime. As he needs to extent his operations to serve increasing demands of CIA and Cartel he moves his operations to rural areas of Arkansas where CIA allocates a huge land for him where he can set up a fleet and employ more pilots. During these continuous operations he faces with an unexpected problem, he earns that much money that he struggles the manage/store his cash; deposits into his bank accounts, puts it into any empty space in his place, buries into his garden, nothing helps him to cover all. After CIA decides to stop their operations in the region, Barry becomes unprotected and all agencies gather around him. Finally he was invited to the White House to be an informant to reveal the relation between the Cartel and the Communist regime in the south. He delivers for this assignment however thanks to secret service his name appears on the news that he becomes a certain target for the Cartel.   He survives for a while however it ends at some point.

“American Made” is a funny action movie.  It makes you laugh and it reveals some historical facts. However story of American Made was short and limited and hovered around back and forth flights and cash storing efforts. At some point you get bored of again and again same scenes. Anyway American Made has an interesting story and makes you enjoy half and hour or so. But don’t have big expectations reading all those positive reviews.

Shot Caller

“Shot Caller” is one of the movies that has both entertainment and a strong social message in it and it is worth watching.

Most difficult part for me was to re-adjust myself for Nikolaj Coster-Waldau; I was so used to him as Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones that it took a while for me that I have managed to imagine him as Money (Jacob) in “Shot Caller”. It became easier to differentiate of course as he has his mustache. This is a very common issue for the actors of long lasting TV series.

From “Shot Caller”‘s social message perspective, I think they have touched to a very sensitive issue about the difficult life in jails. They had the motto; “Safety comes with a price”.  They have successfully criticized the challenge faced in the system today, does the jail mechanism helps avoiding or increasing crime. We see that a successful white collar with a good job and family turns into a professional criminal with a basic motivation of protecting his family in the “Shot Caller”. I am not an expert on the judicial system however what I see in the “Shot Caller” is there is a lot to consider for the officials and all of us for sure. If just %30 of the story reflects the situation today, it means something big.

Anyway “Shot Caller” has an interesting story and it is well played. It starts with dual timing, current and beginning of the story however it doesn’t make you feel that you can anticipate things. Developments are given in a way that you can fully understand the story after first 20-30 minutes of “Shot Caller”. I just felt that situation of the family was a bit under presented, other than that it was satisfactory for me.

Other than Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, performances of Holt McCalany (The Beast), Jonh Bernthal (Frank/Shotgun) and Benjamin Bratt (Sanchez) were worth mentioning from “Shot Caller”. I will not comment on Lake Bell (Kate Harlon) as her show was very limited.

Please let me  know how you felt about it…

The Revenant (2015)

Although The Revenant was shot in 2015 and lots of discussion had been made, I have recently watched it. It is one of the movies that you see limited number of people during 156 minutes and it is centered in a certain story. It reminded me The Hateful Eight (2015) which was very similar to The Revenant in terms story, lots of snow, revenge and lots of kills.

However The Revenant has very touching, extreme moments differently. Some scenes were very unusual and different; fight with the Grizzly bear was very high tension and it makes you heartbeat go real up.  Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) resting in his dead horse’s body after emptying it was one other shocking scene. One thing  I don’t like about these kind of movies is you cannot even recognize the cast due to their dirty beards and hair. I have almost struggled to recognize Tom Hardy as John Fitzgerald during the Revenant.

I felt sad about the end of Captain (Domhnall Gleeson) he was a decent guy however his was naive enough to leave Fitzgerald to guard Glass. Poor Hawk left us to early and Bridger (Will Poulter) was too young to be a soldier.

At the end Glass took his revenge however all the money of the company gone lost with Fitz and I have expected more respect from the lady who was saved by Glass earlier, at east they let him live, that is something to appreciate I think.

The Revenant was one of the top performances of Leonardo DiCaprio, I should give that.

In summary you would enjoy the Revenant if you like long cold dark blue dramas, if you ask me; give it a try.

Fargo (1996)

Fargo is a cold blood drama that took place in cold, snowy Minnesota. It is a big pleasure to watch it with a warm cup of tea or coffee and cookies. Characters are super natural coupled with an amazing script and extraordinary acting. I think it is a nominee to be one of your all-time favorite film.

Is it really based on a true story? I wish it wasn’t however it seems so.

Can a day-to-day small problem grow, expand and result in a big tragedy? In this film, yes and in a logical order.

Story develops around Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy); he is a salesman in a car dealer and experiences financial difficulty. He decides to play a weird game to his father-in-law (Harve Presnell) who is rich and insults Jerry. He teams up with a few junkie to kidnap his own wife so that he can demand ransom for the father-in-law. However all goes totally wrong and out of control. Junkie team kills a few during his kidnap operation.

As the bodies are found outside of the Minnesota, close to border of Brainerd, Brainerd police chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) who is smart and pregnant. Mysteries and breath taking events continues till to the end of the story.

Normally most of us watched it years back however brand new Fargo tv series brought it to our attention again. It is same for me, after years I watched it again after finishing first season of new show.

I strongly recommend that you watch Fargo movie and then start enjoying tv series.

I will add my reviews for the series as well in my coming posts..

The Best Movies of 2017 (So Far)

Lady Macbeth

There have been several aspirations for Macbeth over the last century, this one is an impressive depiction based on the Nikolai Leskov’s Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District which was published in 1865. In this superior shoot, Katherine (Florence Pugh), a 17 year old young woman was forced to get married with an elderly disgusting man (Paul Hilton). His father (Christopher Fairbank) was no nastier then himself. It doesn’t allow you for long to feel sorry for the pretty lady as she transforms into predator from being victim.

Scripted by Alice Birch and a filming performance of William Oldroyd, this movie is one of the attractive performances of 2017.

John Wick 2

This is an amazing sequel to the cool revenge movie in which Keanu Reeves’s main character fights off a set of assassins on many countries. It was directed by Chad Stahelski who was a stunt double in the past. There is no slow motion empty scenes in the movie that it progress even faster that the first one and it makes it even better than it. Fasten your seatbelts and be ready for the take-off. Keanu Reeves ensures that he is the best fit into John Wick role and gives a lot to the movie. In this second run it gives you some flavor of John Wicks story. I bet you will enjoy it and end up hoping the third would come soon.

The Big Sick

This is an amazing performance by Kumail Nanjiani,  who is both a Pakistani comedian and Uber driver who runs into his future wife, Emily Gordon, in one of his performances as comedian.  When Emily gets sick by an unknown illness, it is time for him to get along with her mother and father.  This warm movie makes you feel amazed while you follow him trying to manage cultural shocks on both sides of the family. I can say all of them, Kumail, Emily and all family members deliver top-notch performances which ends up with one of the best comedy performances of 2017. It would be a shame if we don’t see them as nominees for several awards.

This is again a violent Wolverine action movie in which Hugh Jackman is the main character and James Mangold is the Director. It both gives you a good background of Wolverine story and amazing flavor of its characters. Characters are the king in this film may the highest level in all X-Men movies. This is one of the best performances of Hugh Jackman who is now in his middle ages. Old enough for the character with strong physical conditions. You will have a better understanding of Professor X and newcomer girl, Laura. Her performance is no weaker than Hugh Jackman and she gives you constant suprises. If you are comfortable with some high degree violence and enjoy X-men movies, this is a must see for you for 2017
